DALLAS — Police said six people were killed Sunday night in a crash in South Dallas.

The accident happened near the intersection of I-20 and I-45.

First images from the scene show a vehicle that appears to have crashed into a tree.

In a tweet, Dallas Police Maj. Max Geron said four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene and two others expired at or on the way to hospitals.

No additional details were immediately available.

The National Safety Council estimates 395 people will be killed and an additional 42,300 will be injured in car crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend, from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday.

AAA Travel projects 34.7 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during this Labor Day holiday weekend, the highest volume for the holiday since 2008 and a 1.3 percent increase over 2013.

Nearly 86 percent of travelers (29.7 million) planned to celebrate the holiday with a final road trip before summer comes to a close and children head back to school, according to AAA estimates.

AAA defines the Labor Day 2014 holiday travel period as Thursday through today.
