Robin Williams was bound to play a car salesman - USA TODAY

The late Robin Williams wasn't known for his connection to cars. Rather, he was known for his bicycles and love of racing.

He did, however, have a screen role directly related to cars. It was the lead character in Cadillac Man in 1990, a comedy in which he played a philandering car salesman. Ironically, it also involved Williams' character talking a man out of suicide.

It was a minor movie in a career studded with big hits and high points. Critics didn't exactly light up about Cadillac Man , which also starred Tim Robbins.

"It all comes down to which kind of movie you'd really rather see," wrote critic Roger Ebert at the time. "Given the choice, would you prefer a movie about a hotshot car salesman so shameless he'd try to sell a car to a widow at her husband's funeral? Or would you rather see a movie about how the salesman tries to talk a suicidal husband out of killing himself and everybody else in the dealership?

"If Cadillac Man had been the second movie from beginning to end, I have a feeling I might have enjoyed it more."

He gave it two stars.
