N.J. paramedics break into car, save baby doll - New York Daily News

This baby doll was a little too life-like.

A group of overeager but well-intentioned New Jersey paramedics smashed an SUV's window to dramatically rescue a baby doll.

The city of Hoboken has offered to pay for the damage to Luz Kitty Mieles' car after the heroic rescue of Todd the baby doll, one of her granddaughter's toys.

On Thursday afternoon, witnesses reported a baby locked in the Honda parked on a Hoboken street. As summer temperatures soared, EMTs realized the only way to get the car seat-bound baby was to break the window, CBS News York reported.

When the rescue team finally reached the car seat, the crowd realized they had all been fooled.

A group of New Jersey EMTs thought they saw a baby locked in a car on a hot summer day. But when they smashed the window to free the child, they realized it was a doll.

The "baby" was a plastic doll.

Mieles was at work when the EMTs broke into her car. When she found the window smashed, the workers apologized and the city offered to replace it.

She explained to WABC that her granddaughter had put the doll, named Todd, in the car's child seat.

Thomas Molta, president of the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps, said the paramedics made an honest mistake. They have since laughed off the mix-up, but the workers made the right call in the moment, Molta said.

"I'd rather err on the side of caution. You can replace a window. You can't replace a life," he said.

Their worry is not unjustified: On average, 36 U.S. children die in hot cars every year, NBC News reported. That's more than 600 deaths since 1998.

Mieles said she's learned a valuable lesson — she'll never leave Todd in the car ever again.
