A man remained in the hospital Monday, two days after emergency responders rescued him from the steep Mount Washington hillside where he crashed his car through a metal fence Saturday afternoon.

"He's very lucky, very lucky," said Amera Gilchrist, a district chief with Pittsburgh EMS.

After crashing through a metal fence and going over the edge of Grandview Avenue, the man's vehicle rolled downhill about 30 feet, where it was stopped by dense vegetation.

The drop is about a 90-degree angle from the road.

The driver was lifted back up to Grandview via ropes and pulleys. At the highest point, he was suspended about 100 yards in the air.

"He was fine -- alert and oriented, pretty stable," Gilchrist said. "Scraped up pretty good."

EMS crews treated the driver at the scene and then took him to the hospital.

Police said the man may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. It wasn't clear how fast he was going at the time.

"There's a lot of accidents," Gilchrist said. "Whenever you have a guardrail, people fall asleep, people take substances -- which is not the case here -- but it's just a very dangerous roadway."

The driver involved in the crash got out of the car on his own, but EMS crews advise people not to do so if they're ever in a similar situation.

"He could have risked falling farther down the hill, which would have been a more lengthy process, and it could have cost him his safety and the safety of our personnel," Gilchrist said.
