A Bristol woman is accused of leaving her 2-year-old child in the car at a local bar.
According to police, 22-year-old Kelsey James was arrested by officers after she allegedly left her child in a car while she went to a bar.
Police were called to City Sports after management reported an intoxicated and incapacitated female sleeping at the bar around 11:55 p.m. Friday.
"Apparently talking to her, she was very incoherent. She tried to break into a car that wasn't hers. At that point we called police in fear for her safety," said Ron Philbrick, general manager at City Sports Bar.
Officers and EMS personnel transported her to Bristol Hospital for evaluation. At about 5:20 a.m. Saturday, James began to ask about her child. Hospital workers called police, who located James' car.
Police found James' child sleeping in a car seat in the back of the vehicle. The child was taken to the hospital for evaluation and held there for DCF representatives.
"Barely talking, barely walking. You could clearly tell she was intoxicated," said Courtney Lausier, server at City Sports Bar.
Lausier told Eyewitness News that James stumbled into the bar around 11 p.m. Friday. She was given a glass of water to sober up and then she ran into the parking lot, according to Lausier.
"The fact that she drove here. I don't even know how she drove here. It amazed me because her eyes were barely open," said Lausier.
Neighbors of James were shocked and describe her as a good mom.
"Kelsey is a wonderful young girl; has a baby, is very responsible. The family is wonderful," said Pam Drzewiecki.
James' child has left DCF custody and is now in the care of a relative.
Police charged James with risk of injury to a minor and leaving an unsupervised child in a motor vehicle. James was released on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court on Sept. 2.
