Sign UpARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – A violent car crash late Monday night in Arlington cut a vehicle in half, left the driver in critical condition, and caused a power outage that plunged thousands of people into the dark. The incident happened shortly before midnight in the 3400 block of Sublett Road, near Park Springs Boulevard.
According to police, the driver of the car — a man in his early 20s — lost control and hit a power pole and natural gas meter, dragging the meter 100 feet down the street.
Power to a nearby neighborhood had to be cut off, as firefighters were concerned that sparks might cause the leaking natural gas to catch on fire. At the peak, Oncor reported more than 1,600 customers in the dark as a result of this incident. Power began returning to homes at about 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
Rodney Sutton lives in the Arlington neighborhood and went outside after the crash to see what had happened. "I noticed a car laying in two pieces in the middle of the road," he recalled. "It's amazing that he survived."
Authorities said that speed was a factor in the crash, but there was no evidence that alcohol played any role.
The victim was taken to Medical Center of Arlington in critical condition, but his current condition is not known. His name has not been released.
