A car jumped a barrier and landed upside down after tearing an electrical pole in half early Saturday morning in the River West neighborhood, according to police.
The driver fled the scene and is not in custody but at least two of the four people rushed to hospitals after the crash are in critical condition, police said. The wreck happened just after 4 a.m.
The car came to rest on its roof next to a large wall that separates Erie Street just east of Halsted Street from a small train yard adjacent to the Chicago Tribune's printing plant.
Crews had a hard time finding the vehicle but when they found it, they couldn't bring those injured back up where they came from.
Firefighters cut a hole in a chain-link fence and walked the stretchers across the train tracks to a parking lot east of the train yard to the waiting ambulances.
At some point, the driver walked away and is not in custody, police said.
