Car Talk: Drivers shouldn't coast to a stop in neutral - Columbus Dispatch

Dear Car Talk: My husband and I have a bone to pick with you after an answer you gave on the radio a couple of weeks ago. A woman called in saying a guy-friend of hers insisted that when slowing to a stop, she should shift down through each gear, from fifth to first, as she stops. She said that she never does that. Instead, she puts the car in neutral right away and lets it roll to a stop. You said they were both wrong! You said the guy-friend was wrong because the clutch would wear out faster, and it costs more to fix than the brakes. You said she was wrong, too, but you didn't say why! This is driving us nuts! Why is it wrong to put the car in neutral and coast when you see a stop up ahead? We're losing sleep over this.

— Lee

Oh, so you're the one who's been calling my house in the middle of the night for the past six weeks!

You are right that we've never recommended shifting down through all of the gears when coming to a stop. That's excessive (though it is fun). While it does save some wear on the brakes, it uses up a lot of your clutch disc over time. And as Ricky Ricardo would say: Clutches are 'spensive, Lucy!

On the other hand, if you just pop the transmission into neutral, you give up all the natural engine braking. And you lose the ability to accelerate suddenly in an emergency if you need to.

Granted, these are minor arguments, Lee. No one's going to haul you to the International Court of Justice at The Hague for coasting to a stop in neutral.

But this is how I do it: If I'm driving along at 40 mph in fourth gear and see a red light up ahead, I just let up on the gas and use the brake as needed, leaving the car in gear. That way, I get some help with slowing the car from the natural engine braking (which takes advantage of compression and does no harm to the engine). And if someone swerved at me or was suddenly heading at me from the other direction and I needed to get out of the way quickly, I'd be able to accelerate without having to first fumble for the shifter. Then, when I get down to 10 or 15 mph, I push in the clutch and put the car in neutral and brake to a stop.

Now, you may ask: Is that scenario — where you suddenly need to accelerate again — a likely one? No. Has it ever happened to me? No. So you're not committing a crime against car-manity by coasting in neutral. But if I were teaching a new driver, that's the way I would do it — to maximize control over the car. Hope you can get back to sleep now, Lee.

Do-gooder car-jacked, fatally run over collecting food for homeless - New York Post

His charitable heart got him killed.

Long Island do-gooder Dionel Ramirez left his car outside a 7-Eleven as he dropped in to collect surplus food for a soup kitchen on Friday – but a car-jacker jumped in the idling vehicle and fatally ran him over, cops said.

Dionel Ramirez

"Mr. Ramirez attempted to get in front of the car to stop this person," Suffolk County Police Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer told reporters at the scene in North Bay Shore. "The person ran him over and killed him."

Ramirez, 69, went to the store on Pine Aire Drive at around 5:45 a.m. as part of his post-Thanksgiving rounds to collect perishable items for the needy.

He left the driver's-side door of his Hyundai open with the engine running as he went inside, cops said.

Ramirez had poured himself a cup of coffee and was waiting to pick up donated food when he saw the thief slip into the driver's seat.

He ran back out to the parking lot and tried to block the thief's escape by standing in the car's path.

But the man ran over Ramirez with the front and back tires and took off.

"He came in and got a cup of coffee, and then the guy got in his car," said one employee, who declined to give his name. "He ran outside to try and stop him, but he got run over, and the man left in his car."

The employee said police took the store's security video to identify the killer.

Ramirez's car was found abandoned Friday afternoon, although police would not disclose where.

Relatives at Ramirez's North Amityville home said he always went out of his way to help people.

"It's just crazy what happened," daughter Michelle told 1010-WINS. "I thought it was just going to be another normal day, especially after Thanksgiving."

"He came from a country that was poor. He wants to give back to the people that are less fortunate," she said, adding the Guatemalan immigrant often collected food for the homeless.

The killer was still being hunted Friday evening.

Actor-Model Hit By Car, Beaten On Thanksgiving While Trying To Deliver Meal ... - CBS Local

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  A model/actor was beaten by an alleged drunk driver on Thanksgiving after he told the motorist to slow down.

Corey Sligh, 27, who has played a bartender and waiter on CBS' "The Young and the Restless," was with his girlfriend and going to a Rite Aid in West Hollywood to bring a Thanksgiving meal to a friend.

He ended up with a broken arm after the allegedly drunk driver didn't appreciate Sligh telling him to slow down in the parking lot.

Sligh's girlfriend spoke to KCAL9's Laurie Perez from outside Cedars-Sinai where Sligh is hospitalized.

Alisa Berhorst, Sligh's girlfriend, also an actress, told Perez she's barely slept the past 24 hours.

"The whole imagery of everything that happened last night is still very fresh and scary," said Berhorst.

She's been at Sligh's bedside since he was treated for multiple injuries, including the broken arm which required surgery.

Berhorst told Perez that two guys in a car were speeding around the parking lot and doing donuts.

"They almost hit people in the parking lot. They were hitting curbs, and Corey said, 'Please slow down or we're gonna call the cops, just go home."

The men didn't go home.

LAPD confirms they've arrested two men they said exchanged words with the couple, actually hit Sligh with their car and got out of the vehicle and began beating him.

She didn't know if the attack would stop.

"The guy walked up on him like 'I'm in the mood to kill somebody and this is who it's going to be because he told me to be careful and slow down and go away," she said.

Police said the suspects fled the scene but crashed their vehicle nearby. A witness who followed them, helped police locate the suspects.

The fact the alleged suspects were apprehended makes Sligh and Berhorst happy.

"I'm thankful he's okay. I'm thankful that we didn't get killed," Berhorst said.

Taliban kill five in Kabul in attacks on British embassy car, foreign compound - Reuters

(Reuters) - The Taliban bombed a British embassy vehicle in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday morning, killing five people, and attacked a foreign compound in the city center in the evening, officials and witnesses said.

The suicide attack on the car in the east of the Afghan capital killed two embassy workers, one Briton and one Afghan, and wounded more than 30 others nearby, officials said.

A second blast, at a compound run by a contractor for the U.S. aid agency in Afghanistan, shook buildings in the diplomatic quarter and was followed by an intense hour-long gun battle between insurgents and Afghan security forces.

A foreign national was injured and two suicide bombers were killed in the second attack, which started when a car loaded with explosives detonated outside the compound just after 7 p.m., according to security officials.

Hours later, blasts and gunfire continued sporadically and coalition helicopters flew overhead, assisting with efforts to clear the area of at least one more suicide bomber, according to security sources.

A Western security official said the explosion failed to breach the compound walls, which were well fortified. The area was reported clear by about 1 a.m. on Friday morning, local time.

"There are no casualties among the Afghan security forces," said the commander of 111 Military Corps Kabul, Qadam Shah Shaheem, adding that all compound staff were safe.

Thursday's incidents were the latest in a wave of bombings to hit the city as the majority of foreign combat troops prepare to withdraw from the country by the end of the year.

Taliban insurgents, who were ousted from power by a U.S.-led coalition in 2001, claimed responsibility for both attacks, saying the embassy car bomb "targeted foreign invading forces", while the compound was an "important center of the enemy".

Attacks aimed at foreign ! diplomats and civilians are less common than the daily strikes! against Afghan and international military forces across the country.

More than 4,600 Afghan police and army personnel have been killed in the war against the Taliban since the start of the year.

BRITISH CITIZEN KILLED

A Reuters witness saw at least one survivor being led away from the charred shell of the British embassy vehicle by a member of the British security force.

"I am deeply saddened to confirm that a British national civilian security team member and an Afghan national working for the embassy were killed in the incident," Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said in a statement, adding that another Briton had been injured.

G4S, the world's biggest security firm, later confirmed one of its staff had been killed in the blast and another injured.

!

"Next of kin have been informed and we will continue to provide them with support," a company spokesperson said.

The Afghan interior ministry initially reported that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle, but later said the attacker had been in a car.

Since Monday, when two American soldiers were killed in a powerful blast close to the airport, there have been at least five high-profile attacks in Kabul.

Last year a 25-year-old American diplomat was killed in an attack on a convoy in the east of the country, and the U.S. consulate in western Herat province was attacked with a truck bomb. In May, the Indian consulate in the same province was targeted by insurgents with rocket-propelled grenades and suicide vests.

Black Friday car deals abound - USA TODAY

Automakers aren't being left out of the Black Friday rush.

Chevrolet, Buick and BMW are among the brands offering sales deals on new cars. And taking advantage of them should be easy, at least when it come to weather: It's looking relatively good for Friday everywhere except the upper Midwest and Northwest.

•Chevrolet is offering 0% financing and $1,000 cash back on a number of models, including its Silverado pickups.

•Buick is promoting its Black Friday sale on social media, including 20% off on 2014 and 2015 LaCrosse models.

•BMW is offering a big Black Friday promotion focused on financing deals.

"Black Friday represents one of the hottest shopping days in America, and new-car shopping is no exception," says Jack Nerad, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com, in a statement. "There are amazing deals on new cars right now as the calendar year comes to a close."

Among the best deals, Kelley Blue Book says, are a 36-month lease on a Cadillac ATS at $299 a month with $749 due at signing -- not bad on a car KBB says has a "fair" purchase price of $32,138. There's also a 39-month lease on a $22,224 Mazda6 sedan at $189 a month and $1,989 due at signing.

Buyers can usually get a better deal by focusing on 2014 models, which dealers are anxious to clear out to make way for the 2015s.

Others are expecting Black Friday will pay off when it comes to November sales.

"Car sales will remain elevated in November in large part because of Black Friday," says Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell, in a statement. "In recent years both car shoppers and car dealers have turned toward Black Friday as an opportunity to dive into the holiday shopping season."

If you miss the deals, another car shopping site, TrueCar.com, says there will be even steeper discounts on New Year's Eve.

Shoppers who venture to the car lots or malls will generally find good weather Friday in most major metro areas. But . Schneider Electric, which provides forecasts for weather-sensitive businesses like airports and utilities, says watch out in the upper Midwest and Northwest.

Some of the dicier places include:

Duluth, Minn.: 2 inches of snow.

Green Bay, Wis., 1-2 inches of snow.

Milwaukee, Wis.: 1 inches of snow.

Grand Rapids, Mich.: 1-2 inches of snow

Traverse City, Mich.: 1-2 inches of snow

Portland, Ore.: Rain much of the day.

Eureka, CA: Rain much of the day.

Olympia, WA: Rain much of the day.

Cut Bank, Mont.: Snow developing and turning much colder.

Best Black Friday New-Car Deals - Forbes

The day after Thanksgiving – Black Friday – has become so much more than the official start to the holiday shopping season. It's something of a tribal adventure, a challenge to see who can rise the earliest and withstand the highest degree of actual physical pain in search of an unbeatable bona fide bargain. While most of the action has traditionally taken place at department stores and electronics dealers, the high holy day of shopping has also become a major event at new-car showrooms. According to TrueCar, Inc., Black Friday and the Thanksgiving weekend are among the top five or six days of the year in which to leverage the deepest new-car discounts (with New Year's Eve remaining the best day of the year in which to buy a car.)

Most brands are launching their "season of savings" promotions this week (get used to seeing those inferiority complex-inducing commercials with cars wrapped in giant ribbons for the next several weeks) while others are going all in with generous sales incentives especially targeted for Black Friday and the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend. Early holiday campaigns are expected to help November new-car sales outpace last year's figures for the same period by 1.6 percent according to Edmunds.com.

"Car sales will remain elevated in November in large part because of Black Friday," says Edmunds.com senior analyst Jessica Caldwell. "In recent years both car shoppers and car dealers have turned toward Black Friday as an opportunity to dive into the holiday shopping season. This is a good example of how the auto industry continues to evolve to become more like the rest of the retail market."

Among the biggest deals of the Thanksgiving weekend can be found at Buick dealers, where the automaker is offering a whopping 20 percent of MSRP cash back on Verano, Regal and LaCrosse sedans as part of their Black Friday Sales Event running through December 1. That would be as much as $8,000 off the top version of the 2015 LaCrosse (not including the dealer's discount), which would be one of the largest incentives we've seen since Mercedes-Benz was offering soon-to-be shuttered Maybach dealers an extra $100,000 per unit to help discount and clear their inventories of unsold uber-luxury sedans.

Of course there is a catch. According to the brand's consumer website, the 20 percent off promotion only applies to the 20 percent of all Verano, Regal and LaCrosse that have been in stock the longest as of November 21. That almost certainly means most will be 2014 models, which have already accumulated a year's depreciation without ever having been titled, and at that they're likely vehicles with odd feature combinations or color combinations that have thus far been hard to sell. Still, that's some serious money being slapped on the hood to help foster a sale.

Even with the new-car business on a continued upswing, automakers continue to pile on the incentives – including cash rebates and lease/finance deals – to help keep customers coming through dealers' showroom doors. According to data supplied by TrueCar, Inc., auto manufacturers' incentive spending averaged $2,660 per vehicle in November, which is down a slight 0.2 percent from a year earlier and a drop of 2.3 percent over October 2014. General Motors is expected to spend the most money on incentives this month at an average $3,304 per vehicle, with runners up Ford and Fiat Chrysler putting up $3,217 and $3,027 per unit, respectively.

What's more, declining gas prices are beginning to have an effect on new-vehicle supply, demand and deals. Consumers are beginning to take a second look at larger cars and SUVs/crossovers for the first time perhaps since the Great Recession, with interest in the smallest and most fuel-efficient models waning. "Small cars and small SUVs have experienced high demand for the last several years due to elevated gas prices and overall affordability, which made getting great deals on them rare," says Jesse Toprak, chief analyst for Cars.com. "Since gas prices have started to decline, consumers are now finally able to get significant discounts, as well as great financing and leasing deals, on most small cars and SUVs."

We're highlighting 15 of the richest sales incentives for Black Friday and the Thanksgiving weekend presented in the accompanying slide show, based on information provided by Cars.com, TrueCar, Inc. and Edmunds.com. These include low-payment le! ase deals, cut-rate financing and direct-to-consumer cash rebates on an assortment of truly worthy rides like the Acura TLX, BMW 3 Series, Jeep Cherokee, Ram 1500 and Subaru Outback, among others.

As always, shoppers should always run the numbers to see whether taking a cash rebate or manufacturer-supported financing is the better deal on a given model. And be aware that only those with top credit ratings will qualify for the best financing and leasing promotions. Also, other rebates, such as those given to current owners or direct competitors or to members of the military, recent college graduates or other groups may apply, and specific incentives may vary by region.

Importantly, keep in mind that such promotions all come directly from the automaker. For their part, dealers should also be willing to slash their markups to clear their inventories – especially on slower selling models – so be sure to negotiate the transaction price separately from any cash rebate that may apply and shop around for the best bottom-line deal.

In Pictures: 15 Best Black Friday New-Car Deals.

And we'd caution consumers not to get caught up too deeply in the Black Friday hoopla and drive a model off a dealer's lot they might not otherwise be happy with down the road no matter how great a deal it may seem. As it is, data gathered by AutoTrader.com suggests that a whopping 69 percent of car shoppers experience buyer's remorse after purchasing a new vehicle, among other reasons because they felt the car was too expensive or a bad deal, it was an impulse purchase or the car didn't have the features they wanted.

"On big shopping days like Black Friday, consumers can get caught up in the excitement of a good deal, sometimes at the expense of their needs, wants and budget," says AutoTrader site editor Brian Moody. "In addition to hunting for a good value, consumers should search for a car that suits their lifestyle 365 days of the year."
