First self-cleaning car sheds paint, chocolate syrup - USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES — It's every car owner's dream: a car that never gets dirty. And the technology to do it is being demonstrated by Nissan at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Whether it's paint or chocolate syrup — Nissan is demonstrating with both — liquids slide right off of the white Nissan Leaf. The car has a Teflon-like coating that's so dense and slick that it repels mud, dirt and grime. If the liquids don't slide off on their own, all it takes is a little water or blowing air on them to coax them away.

Nissan is still testing the finish on a Leaf. It has its downsides: The finish is sort of flat or matte, not the super shiny look that most car buyers seem to prefer. It's also rough, like fine sandpaper.

"The 100% electric Leaf provides the perfect canvas for this new, advanced paint technology," said Pierre Loing, vice president of product planning for Nissan North America, in a statement about finish in July. "This is one Leaf that never has to stop at gas stations – not even for a car wash."
