NEW ROCHELLE – Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found early Sunday morning in a burning car in a parking lot off Webster Avenue.
New Rochelle firefighters responded to a report of a car fire at County Beverages at 28 Webster Avenue around 5:45 a.m., and found the blue Volkswagen fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered the body inside the car. A police forensics unit remained at the scene through 9 a.m.
Police did not release many details, including the name of the victim. It was not clear if the incident was an accident or a crime, or why the man did not get out of the vehicle as it burned.
The badly-charred car appeared to have smashed into the wall of a gray, cinder block garage or storage facility between County Beverages and the Prowash Express car wash at 25 Webster Avenue.
One neighbor, Patricia Walker, 45, reported hearing a loud explosion.
"Within minutes the firetrucks came so I knew it had to be something serious," she said. "I didn't smell smoke or anything."
