A car fire in northwest Redmond late Friday night led to the discovery of a body inside the burned-out car – and that in turn led to an extensive investigation and pleas for public information as police work to determine just what happened.
Police said Saturday they have tentatively identified the person but released few other details.
Firefighters and police responded around 11 p.m. Friday to the reported car fire in the area of NW 21st Street and Larch Avenue, Sgt. Curtis Chambers said in a news release.
Fire crews quickly put out the fire and found a deceased person inside, Chambers said.
The cause of the fire and the person's death is under investigation by Redmond police and fire, Oregon State Police and the Deschutes County district attorney's and medical examiner's offices.
The person has been tentatively identified, Chambers said, and family has been notified. But the sergeant said no other details -- including the person's age or gender, or details about the car – are likely to be released until at least Monday, "if appropriate to do so."
The cause and manner of the death is under investigation, Chambers said.
Chambers said the car doesn't belong to anyone in the neighborhood, and police were not looking for anyone else or other vehicles. But he said the cause of the fire also is under investigation.
As for the person inside, he told NewsChannel 21, "We won't know more until an autopsy is conducted" in coming days.
Chambers also said police canvassed the area and talked to residents at a couple of nearby homes. Residents reported seeing a police tactical team and OSP forensics unit working on scene for several hours Saturday.
Chambers said police want to hear from anyone who was in the area of Northwest Larch Avenue between 19th and 21st Streets after sunset Friday and "observed a vehicle and/or a person not belonging to the neighborhood or anything suspicious."
