BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana basketball player Devin Davis remains hospitalized in serious condition following an accident early Saturday morning after he was struck by a car being driven by one of his teammates.
Davis, a sophomore forward, was injured in a car accident that also involved fellow Hoosier player Emmitt Holt, an 18-year-old freshman.
Davis, 19, was listed in serious condition at Bloomington Hospital Saturday morning, per an IU press release. Further updates on his condition later in the day were unavailable, according to a hospital spokesperson.
According to a Bloomington Police Department press release, Holt, a freshman forward, drove Davis to and dropped him off in the parking lot of Memorial Stadium at approximately 12:45 a.m. Saturday.
Holt then turned back onto 17th Street, heading west, when "for reasons unknown," Davis reentered the roadway. He was struck by the front passenger side of Holt's 2012 Jeep Liberty.
"Damage to the vehicle was located near the passenger side front fender and windshield," the release said.
Police responding to the scene found Davis unconscious and suffering from a head injury on the north side of 17th Street, at its intersection with Indiana Avenue. He was treated at the scene and taken to Bloomington Hospital.
Because of his age, Holt was cited for illegal consumption of alcohol, a misdemeanor, and for operating under the influence of alcohol under the age of 21, an infraction. According to an Indiana press release, he registered a blood alcohol content of 0.025 after the incident.
The police department release stated that Holt "had been consuming alcohol, but was not intoxicated." That release also mentions "other witnesses in the vehicle" but does not identify them.
"First and foremost, our thoughts are with Devin and his family and we pray that his condition improves in the coming days," IU coach Tom Crean said in a statement. "An injury to one of us is an injury to all of us and we are devastated by the news.
"We will continue to support Devin and Emmitt in every possible way and I know the Hoosier family will come together to rally for these young men. We are working to gather additional information on the accident."
Crean did not expound publicly upon that statement Saturday. He spent the day at the hospital with Davis and his family.
"Without knowing all of the details, no matter what, the basketball coaches here and his teammates pray and hope that Emmitt and his teammates get through this," Matt Spadoni, Holt's high school coach, told the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. "We also 100 percent support Emmitt, we know the person he is. He would be the last person involved in something where someone gets hurt."
Indiana postponed the open practice and scrimmage portions of Saturday's planned Haunted Hall of Hoops event, which had been scheduled to begin at noon.
Several of the fans waiting outside Assembly Hall for the event reportedly left when they heard the practice and scrimmage had been canceled, before news of Davis' accident spread.
IU elected to go forward with the second part of the event, a Halloween-themed picture and autograph session with children in attendance. Players spent the afternoon mingling with fans, but were kept off limits to the media.
Saturday's incident marks the third time an Indiana player has had a run-in with the law since February, when forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea was charged with OWI and Yogi Ferrell and Stanford Robinson received pretrial diversion for illegal consumption and having fake IDs in April.
Indiana made the decision in the offseason to move all of its players into on-campus housing. In the past, freshmen were required to live on campus, while returning players could live off campus. Davis is roommates with Ferrell and redshirt junior Nick Zeisloft in on-campus housing.
