Hall is the oldest serving member of Congress

PLANO — U.S. Rep. Ralph Hall remained hospitalized on Sunday after being injured in a car accident in Fannin County on Saturday.

Hall — who at age 91 is the oldest serving member of Congress — was airlifted by Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter ambulance to Medical Center of Plano for treatment. He was said to be conscious and joking with paramedics on the trip after suffering a hip injury and minor cuts and bruises.

A hospital official said the politician was later transferred from the emergency room to a hospital room where he was said to be in fair and stable condition on Sunday following unspecified surgery.

According to preliminary information, Hall had just attended the Fannin County Fair Parade in downtown Bonham. He was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck by another car on Highway 121 just south of Bonham on Saturday afternoon. The accident site is about 22 miles northeast of McKinney.

Neither driver was injured. Hall was expected to make a full recovery.

According to his official biography, Hall was born in the Rockwall County community of Fate, Texas in 1923. He served as a pilot aboard an aircraft carrier in World War II.

After the war, Hall attended SMU and earned a law degree, serving in private practice until his wife urged him to run for public office.

Hall was Rockwall County Judge from 1950-62 and followed that as a Texas State Senator from 1962-72.

He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1980 and has served continuously since then. He switched to the Republican party in 2004.

Hall has three sons and five grandchildren. His wife, Mary Ellen Murphy, died in 2008. They had been married for 64 years.

Family members declined to speak with media Saturday night about the incident, a decision relayed by a hospital representative.
