The most ticketed car in the United States doesn't race to 60 miles per hour in fewer than four seconds, or, generally, come painted in red. It isn't Italian, German, or even American-made. And you probably haven't seen it in many movies, because, frankly, it just isn't all that fancy, or fast.
A new study by Insurance.com, which surveyed more than 500 car models and 550,000 customers, found that a greater percentage of Subaru WRX (this car) owners are caught speeding and committing other traffic violations than those of any other car. In all, more than a third of people who drive the Subaru WRX reported having received a ticket recently. Just under 33 percent of Pontiac GTO and Scion FRS owners said they had received a ticket recently, the second and third highest percentages, respectively. The Toyota Supra, for which roughly 31 percent of owners reported to have been ticketed, was fourth on the list.
Interestingly enough, not a single so-called sports car made it into the top 20. Many of faster cars roaming about America's roads are, in fact, and somewhat counterintuitively, are all the way down at the bottom of the list. The Dodge Viper, for instance, is the least ticketed. And the Jaguar XJR is 519th on the list (out of 526, mind you), the Porsche 911 is 447th, and the Chevrolet Corvette is 420th.
How can that be?
A reasonable guess: The driver has a lot more to do with the infraction than the car. "Cars don't get tickets, drivers do—but those drivers like the WRX," Des Toups, the managing editor of Insurance.com, said in a statement. Sports cars—and more expensive cars in general—tend to be owned by older people, who statistically speaking are less likely to be ticketed or, for that matter, crash (look no further than high insurance premiums for young people for evidence). "The Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R rank well below average for tickets even though they can easily double the highest speed limits. But those cars are also costly, so their buyers tend to be older and take fewer risks," Toups said.
For that same reason, the Toyota Supra and Mercury Topaz, both of which are discontinued models, might rank so highly. Used cars, after all, are cheaper cars.
It's worth noting that while extensive, the study is by no means definite in its conclusions. In order for a car model to be considered, at least 50 owners had to have participated, which means that it would only take 17 Subaru WRX owners with a speeding ticket for the car to top the list.
Still, while a more comprehensive study might rank certain car models higher or lower than they appear above, the overall trend is nevertheless interesting and would likely hold. Fancy, fast cars aren't correlated with speeding tickets and traffic violations; young people are.
