PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A car went into the Columbia River after swerving to miss another vehicle, killing the only person inside the car.
A woman in her 40s died when her car went off Marine Drive and into the Columbia River, Dec. 31, 2014 (PF&R)The car went into the river around 7:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of Marine Drive in Portland, officials said. Witnesses told authorities the car swerved to avoid another vehicle and crashed into the river.
Headlights could be seen about 25 feet out in the river, PF&R Lt. Damon Simmons told KOIN 6 News. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Dive Team was activated and found the person, a woman in her 40s, about an hour later.
The name of the person has not been released.
It is unclear at this time if the vehicle that caused the car to swerve stayed at the scene.
Marine Drive was closed between NE 33rd and 122nd Avenue for hours, but re-opened later.
