PORTLAND, Ore. – The driver of a car died Wednesday night after crashing into the Columbia River, according to the Portland Fire Bureau.
Initial radio reports indicate the car swerved off Northeast Marine Drive and ended up in the river, said Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Damon Simmons.
The driver was Melissa Parke, 46, of Portland, the Multnomah County Medical Examiner's office announced Friday.
The crash happened in the 8500 block of Northeast Marine Drive at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Arriving firefighters found what looked like headlights glowing in the water about 25 feet from the river bank.
Authorities closed the road between 33rd and 122nd avenues (the closest intersections) while rescue boats from several agencies searched the river for the car or anyone who may be trying to swim to shore.
Parke was the only person inside the car, officials said.
A Multnomah County Sheriff's dive team recovered the driver's body, confirming that no one else was inside the car.
Police said they are still trying to find out why Parke veered off the roadway and into the water.
This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
